EXTRAORDINARY EXPECTATIONS

I thought civilization was all about education

So I got educated only to realize

It’s still the same Africa

Just with more educated women

And educated or not

The best that is expected of us is to belong to a man

Educated or not,

We are applauded when we get a man

And overlooked when we attain the extraordinary

So I looked myself in the mirror

And promised never to settle for less

Where less is appreciated

And the extraordinary is overlooked

I choose to remain extraordinary

Yes, I’m smart,

Yes I’m beautiful

Yes I’m Educated

And yes I wear it with pride

I’m not just another trophy

I am a woman with extraordinary capabilities

Able to color up my home,

Cover up my man,

And still be extraordinary enough to transform my society

I do not settle for societal expectations

I am more, so much more than they expect me to be

I am a woman

I am extraordinary
